Anson: She would, you know, say something before the game, she would be saying stuff throughout the game, and finally, when were about to end, at the end of the NCAA tournament, and my real leaders came up to me and said Anson, youve got to get so-and-so to shut the F up. And it was just extraordinary. Other values are more inspiringthe truly extraordinary do something every day, we choose to be positive, and we care about each other as teammates and as human beings. So over the past 28 years, since our program began in 1979, what are the best elements of our tradition? The coach hates me. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. Theyre still going to hate you for the rest of their lives. And this has served me better than any other piece of advice I have ever been given in leadership and coaching in my life. Everything has a different quality. And so I really appreciated that. Anson: Hi. Youre not a social worker, youre not an anthropologist. Every one of them has memorized that. To the minute, its telling me whats going to happen in every single second of this practice. He says one factor is 12 Core Values. Think about that for a second. The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit If I say you lead by example, what Im basically saying is youre not a leader because leading by example is not leadership, youre just my best frigging player. He would say every one of you guys are underpaying HR. Every person is different. Right now were talking about future of work. So heres what the cauldron does. If I have a 30 player roster at the end of every night, I have three analytics boys that are getting degrees in statistics here, convert that days practice into data and theyre ranked, theyre ranked from one to 30. These have been developed over the years. We have won 22 national championships. I just dont think this guy understands anything about the American educational system and doesnt understand who the heck we are, so lets go in and let him know this just is not what we were expecting. This woman said this was transformational. And I cant forget to admit he also had 5 players on stage at the World Cup last week. And the thing, whats interesting about reading all these books is what theyre all telling us is youve got to have a set of core values and youve got to live by them. Im sorry, professor, but I dont think you understand where you are. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. And so thats my main job. Its basically about accountability. Anson: I dont want to give speeches anymore. So anyway, so here is one experiment I tried 1 year. And he is so right. And this was a game changer for us in practice, because before you came to practice the next day you could go to our bulletin board and in 28 different categories you would see where you ranked on the team. But when you talk to your mom youre claiming that you are, so like, you know, Mom, I cant believe it, you know, Im kicking everyones rear end in practice, and Im just not given a chance at the game. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. And for us to see whats working all we have to do is to go to our test. But right now for us its hit or miss. Anson: So basically we have this hidden language the players know that Im using with the press thats designed to sort of protect them, but also designed to let them know theyre not good enough yet. You can just make. So now what I do, if theyre below that black line, I meet with them, I talk about how wonderful it would be for them to transfer to Stanford and destroy their program. It is an elusive holy grail in a way figuring out. Anson: Okay. So heres the advantage of this. Behind the coaches back, behind everyones back, theyre whining to their parents. And I called her up to sort of vet him. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. Exactly right. And now these students are looking at each other and they cant believe it. The School of Government depends on private and public support for fulfilling its mission. So you call up your mom because obviously shes sympathetic, or your dad if hes the more sympathetic one, and you talk about the injustice of the universe, about how youre kicking everyones ass in practice, even though thats absolutely not true, because youre looking at the data every single day after practice on the bulletin board and youre ranked in the bottom 5% of the team, and all this sort of stuff is telling you youre not working that hard. Dorrance challenges his players to commit to accomplishing something greatfor the team and for themselvesand following a set of common values has helped to create a winning culture. Its similar to, you know, me telling that player that, you know, if I say you lead by example what Im saying is youre not a leader. Anson: Well, its hit or miss, I mean. If its the two bigs against two other bigs, theyre having a little two V two competition underneath the basket. So not only do we have 28 different categories, but all the categories have different value, and some of the value is extraordinary if you dont achieve in it you dont even get to practice with us. And let me tell you this, when you fire them, what you are hoping for them, they can find a place they want to be for a company they want to work for. To live the core values is incredibly challenging because this is a review of their character. Can business save America in a very positive sense? And of course everyone gasps, and everyone is now throwing their hands into the air. So we took every one of our principles and we attached a motivational quote that every kid in our program had to memorize. Seperate multiple e-mail addresses with a comma. Melissa: Thats really interesting. Anson: And life isnt fair, right. And now youre ranked from one to 15. And it changed, it changed her cerebral fabric. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. Many of the values are drawn from books on leadership, and they are illustrated by a diverse set of symbols and quotations. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. But heres the coolest thing about evaluating people with numbers. And you dont want them to blame anyone else. And I know all you chickenshits are afraid to open your mouth, but Im going to need some of you to open your friggin mouths because we cant have a bloody, you know, committee meeting in the middle of a freaking game to solve our damn problem. Paraphrase, and obviously were bringing in our culture. And if your particular leadership voice or coaching voice doesnt work with this person, youve got to change your voice. I could feel the love. And my ego after that conversation or soaring like a hawk, she could feel my love. Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders. They do not want to excel. I get to watch one of the greatest coaches of all time in any sport run his sessions. And the core value review is not done by me, its done by their peers. But also, the other superpower I would love, if I couldnt see the future, was I would love to be able to see an individuals character.
